Abstract

370,621. Drying-cylinders. ARMSTRONG, W., Garden Engineering Works, Ramsbottom, Lancashire. March 19, 1931, No. 8413. [Class 34 (i).] A drying-cylinder a has a removable end cover a2 with hollow extension a3 which runs in a ball or doll-head or other bearing b. A revolvable bucket structure d located inside the cylinder near one end has one or more off-set hollow extensions with inlet mouth d<1> directed to the inner sheet metal periphery of the drying cylinder. The bucket structure has a horizontal tube c which passes through the hollow member a<3>. It is supported in a bearing at c<1> in a shaped casting e secured to the cover a<2>, and also in bearings at c<2>, c<3>. The outlet from the tube c is coupled through an accommodating joint f to a drainage outlet g leading to a steam trap. A chain wheel, gear wheel, or other driving means h rotates the tube c and the bucket structure d independently of the rotation of the cylinder. Steam enters the concentric aperture e<1> from the supply pipe s and reaches the interior of the cylinder through apertures e<2> in the bearing casting e. If desired, the bucket contrivance may be balanced by an oppositely directed arm, or it may have an axial support extending from the opposite end of the cylinder. The Provisional Specification describes also a construction where the bucket structure is rotated by a turbine actuated by the heating fluid.
