Feb. 18, 1931, No. 5188, [Class 47 (ii).] An impact release mechanism for fireextinguishing apparatus for use on aircraft or vehicles comprises a mass supported between two points by spring pressure acting at one or both points. In case of impact, the mass is jerked from its supports, causing or allowing - actuation of the extinguisher through a relay device. As shown, the mass comprises a pendulum 2 mounted to swing about the axis of a rod 1 held at its ends in sockets 3, 4. The socket 4 is urged through a bearing 5 towards the rod by a spring 6. A lever 8 arranged between the spring 6 and socket 4 is pivoted at 9 and has a lug 14 engaging a fork on a pivoted lever 12. When the rod 1 is jerked from the sockets by abnormal impact of the vehicle or aircraft, the spring 6 moves the lever 8 to tilt the lever 12. This acts to release a pawl 16<1> from a ratchet 17, so allowing a spring 18 to rotate a cam 19. This acts to release a detent 26 which normally holds inoperative the piercer 28 of a container 32 for fire-extinguishing medium. When so released, the piercer is first driven in and then retracted by springs 28, 30 acting through toggle links 33, 34. In modifications, both sockets may be spring-loaded, or the rod 1 may be replaced by a tube furnished .at its ends with spring-loaded studs. The mass may actuate the extinguisher through an electrical or pneumatic relay. The Provisional Specification describes also a mass comprising a weight through which a coil spring passes, and the provision of a hand control for pulling the mass from the sockets.
