Abstract

369,065. Crucibles ; ladles. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO., Ltd., 17, Victoria Street, London.-(Assignees of Northrup, E. F. ; Ajax Park, Trenton, New Jersey, U.S.A.) May 14, 1931, No. 14286. Convention date, July 26, 1930. [Class 82 (i).] In a lining for a crucible or ladle, of the kind in which the inner surface of refractory material 17 is sintered by the heat of the charge, and a protective covering 15 is interposed to act as a shield during sintering and is afterwards melted out or destroyed, the shield is formed of non-metallic material, e.g. asbestos board, cement, or porcelain. The material 17 may consist of silica sand, zircon sand, or magnesite, chrome, or electrically fused magnesia in powdered form, and a small quantity of a flux such as boric acid may be added. The Figure shows the invention applied to a ladle mounted on trunnions 24<1> and formed with a pouring spout 20<1>; in this construction, a flux, such as boric acid, is added only to that part of the refractory material 17 above the maximum charge level 25. The application of the invention to an inductively heated ladle or storage vessel is also described.
