Abstract

368,508. Drilling. CONSOLIDATED PNEUMATIC TOOL CO., Ltd., 170, Piccadilly, and SCOTT, G., 20, Eswyn Road, Tooting, both in London. Feb. 25, 1931, No. 5910. [Class 83 (iii).] In a fluid-pressure feed-motion for a pneumatic or electric portable drill, the feed is effected by a pneumatic piston, pressure being applied to both sides of the piston for a slow starting feed and to the larger side only for the working feed. A cylinder a is attached to the casing of the drill by a screw thread b and receives a piston c whose rod d carries a centre for engaging a fixed abutment. Air is supplied to the cylinder through a valve p and pipes g, h, the valve having two sets of ports l, m'and the cover j being provided with three indicated positions for starting feed, full feed and stop. In the first position air is admitted to both sides of the piston to produce a slow feed until the drill has reached its full working speed, whereupon a quarter-turn of the valve connects the side c<1> of the piston to exhaust and maintains pressure on the side c<2> to give the full working feed. A further quarter-turn of the valve connects both sides of the piston to exhaust, and a spring may be provided in the cylinder to effect the return. The feed may be used with drills of small diameter by maintaining the valve in the starting position. A particular example of piston and rod dimensions and pressures is given in the Specification.
