Abstract

368,320. Controlling alternating current commutator machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Hull, J. I. ; 1338, Dean Street, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 25, 1930, No. 35480. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1929. [Class 35.] Relates to shifting the brushes of a motor of the Schrage type, such as that described in Specification 25358/11, [Class 35, Dynamoelectric generators &c.], to regulate the speed and consists in keeping one brush stationary while the other is moved to a certain distance from it and then moving them in opposite directions with the same angular velocity ; it is stated that the power factor is thereby maintained at a value approaching its maximum over a considerable portion of the speed range. For this purpose the brushes 14, 15 are mounted on a rotating yoke 18 and the brushes 16, 17 on a yoke 19. The yokes 18, 19 are connected by links 22, 23 to a bolt 26 sliding in a slot C, D, E in a fixed plate 31. The portions C, E of the slot are radial and the portion D is approximately the arc of a circle. When the bolt 26 is in the middle of the portion D of the slot the pivot 24 of the link 22 is at the centre of this portion and the brushes are in position for synchronous running. As the bolt 27 moves through the portion D the brushes 14, 15 remain stationary and the brushes 16, 17 move ; as the bolt moves through the portions C and E of the slot the brushes move in opposite directions with the same angular velocity. To give an exceptionally high or low torque at starting the slot C, D, E is formed with an extension F, Fig. 8, at one end formed as the arc of a circle the centre of which is at one of the pivots 24 when the brushes are in the corresponding position, whereby one of the brushes is given a movement apart from the other. The handle 35 which operates the bolt 26 and links 22, 23 may also operate the starting switch 41 as shown. To the handle 35 may be pivoted a handle 34 arranged to engage with a rack 39 and connected to the handle 35 by a spring 37, so that when the handle 35 is released after the proper manipulation for starting it is automatically brought into the position appropriate to any desired speed.
