[Class 29.] Compression machines and systems.-Water, air, or other fluid contained in a vessel D is heated by the circulation of a volatile fluid such as butane in a closed cycle consisting of a compressor B, a condenser C, a motor E, which may be replaced by a reducing valve, and an evaporator A. The evaporator A may be exposed to the atmosphere or placed in flowing water from which it absorbs heat to maintain the evaporation of the butane under the reduced pressure produced by pump B. The condensation of this vapour in coils C under the pressure produced by pump B causes an evolution of heat which is absorbed by the fluid in vessel D. To attain higher temperatures two cycles may be combined, the evaporator of one being heated by the condenser of the other. The liquid in the higher temperature cycle may be methyl alcohol or water.
