Abstract

368,107. Signal flares. DRIGGS, L. L., 1, Hale Place, New Rochelle, and FABER, H. B:, 50, East 41st Street, both in New York, U.S.A. April 8, 1931, No. 10376. [Class 9 (ii).] Relates to projectiles containing a flare 19, Fig. 2, and a parachute 20 and adapted to be discharged by a propellant cartridge 14 for example from a breech-loading pistol having a drop-down barrel, the projectile being burst open and the flare ignited by a charge 15 fired by a delay fuse 13 ignited by the propellent cartridge 14 for example as described in Specifications 322,865 and 322,866, [both in Class 9 (ii), Torpedoes &c.]. According to the invention, the flare container 18 is detachable from the base 12 of the projectile, for example by unscrewing at 16, and the flare has a primer 23, which besides being capable of ignition by the bursting charge 15 can also be ignited by a friction surface 31, Fig. 6, on a striker 30. When the flare 18 is thus detached, it is secured to a stick 29, Fig. 5, between jaws 24, 25 tightened by a screw 27, and after ignition by the friction surface 31 can be held aloft like an ordinary signal flare.
