Abstract

367,134. Umbrellas. SCHARF. M. M., 126, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 22, 1931, No. 2176. [Class 134.] In umbrellas wherein a cover 15 is attached to detachable tips 11 of the ribs, portions of the cover are folded back along the tips 11 in a direction towards the apex of the umbrella, and each portion is attached to a tip by a two-sectioned binding 14 passing through a bore 13 in the tip and around its exterior on opposite sides of the bore. The cover 15 is first placed on the tips with its reverse side facing outwardly. It is secured in this position to each tip by passing the stitching or binding 14 through the bore 13, then around one side, back through the bore again, and then around the other side. Each tip may in turn be held in a support in a machine, and the stitching may be effected by relative movement between a reciprocating needle and the tip and cover. When the cover is thus secured, it is turned back on itself, set on the frame, and the tips mounted on the ribs.
