Abstract

365,352. Lapping toothed g e a r s . KLINGELNBERG, G. A., KLINGELNBERG, M., KLINGELNBERG, R. G., KLINGELNBERG, W. H., and KLINGELNBERG, H. W., (trading as KLINGELNBERG SOHNE, W. F.), Remscheid, Berghausen, Germany. Feb. 9, 1931, No. 4057. Convention date, Feb. 11, 1930. [Class 60., In lapping spur or bevel gears by running them in meshing engagement and applying abrasive thereto, the gears are given additional relative lateral axial and irregular angular wobbling movements so as to render the gears insensitive to errors in their relative positions when assembled for service. In cutting the gears, a grinding tolerance is left on the tooth flanks as shown in Fig. 4, this tolerance being greater at the tips and roots of the teeth where the sliding movement is greatest and less at the pitch circle. This excess metal is removed during the lapping to obtain the correct involute profile. The tooth depth is also made larger than usual being from 2.25 to 2À3 times the module. The bed 1 is provided with perpendicular guides 2, 3, the former supporting a headstock 4 carrying the spindle 5 of one of the gears 7 to be treated and the latter supporting a slide 4<1> having a pivot 37 for a rocking plate 36 which carries the headstock 9 for the spindle 6 of the co-operating gear 8. This headstock may be angularly adjusted by means of a circular slide 38 to enable bevel gears to be treated. The spindle 5 is mounted in a sleeve 10 having spherical portions bearing eccentrically in discs 11, 12, the discs being themselves eccentrically mounted in a barrel member 15. The discs are adjustable in the barrel to vary the eccentricity of each end of the spindle 5. The barrel is driven through worm gearing 17, spiral gears 19, shaft 20, and worm gearing 21 from a motor 22, the rotation of the barrel imparting to the gear 7 a threedimensional " wobble motion. The shaft 20, Fig. 18, also drives an eccentric cam 26 which through a slide 27, screw 28, and nut 29 reciprocates the headstock 4 to vary the lateral distance between the gear spindles. A shaft 32, also driven from the shaft 20, carries an eccentric device consisting of inner and outer parts 34, 33, respectively, these parts being relatively adjustable to vary the eccentricity of the part 33 from zero to a maximum. The part 33 engages in the forked end of the plate 36 which is thus rocked on its pivot 37. At the same time the part 33 reciprocates a screwed spindle 39 engaging a nut 40 on the slide 4<1>, thus imparting a relative movement longitudinally of the gear teeth. The headstocks may be adjusted by means of handwheels 43, 44, on the spindles 39, 28, respectively,
