Abstract

365,137. Closing and sealing paper &c. bags. BROOKE BOND INDIA, Ltd., 2, Metcalfe Street, and WOOD, C., 3, Hide Road, Kidderpore, both in Calcutta, India. Sept. 9, 1930, No. 26891. [Class 94 (i).] Paper &c. containers are closed and sealed by scoring a line along the flap or portion of the bag that is to be turned over to determine the length thereof, folding over the flap &c. along the scored line, gumming the flap &c. along a determined line and crimping the turned over portion to the container along the gummed line. Small paper bags, previously filled with tea &c., are fed by conveyer bands, with their open ends 16, Fig. 2, uppermost between a scoring disc 13 and rotating plate 18 which crease the upper end of the bag and bend it over towards the bevelled surface 9 of a gumming wheel 1. The gumming wheel is mounted on the shaft 8 of the scoring disc and, being slightly larger than the disc, applies a strip of gum with a wiping action across the top of the bag. During the further progress of the bag, a folding plate bends over the top part of the throat, about the crease 35, Fig. 7. As shown, one side of the bag extends above the other forming a flap 31 and the strip of gum 33 is applied with its centre at the base of the flap. The folded ends pass between crimping or knurling rollers 24, 24a, Fig. 5, disposed between plain rollers 25, 26. The crimping rollers indent the sides of the bag with small indentations in staggered relationship and spaced apart by distances rather more than their width. The plain rollers squeeze the gum and force it mostly into the crimped area. Additional crimpings may be effected above or below or above and below the gummed strip. The arrangement separates the gum from the contents of the bag by a line of crimping and a sharp fold, thereby preserving the contents from contamination by the gum.
