Abstract
In the production of barium oxide from barium carbonate fusion is prevented by admixing therewith at least an equivalent quantity of calcium carbonate and preferably so much that a weight ratio of barium to calcium oxide of 1 : 1 is obtained, and calcining the mixture with a slow increase of temperature to 1400 DEG C. Calcination may be effected in a rotary furnace, or by briquetting the mixed carbonates, in a stationary one. Carbon may be added to the reaction mixture, and when the carbonates contain sulphur or sulphur is introduced from the fuel used, calcination is effected in a reducing atmosphere and in the presence of steam, the latter being provided for instance by employing a hydrogen-bearing fuel. When producer gas is used, the air for combustion is preheated.
