Abstract

361,786. Motor vehicle power units ; internal-combustion engines. MICHELL CRANKLESS ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., 20, Grosvenor Gardens, London.-(Hall, E. S. ; 82, Grand Avenue, New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A.) March 26, 1931, No. 9238. Convention date, March 26, 1930. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii).] Comprises power transmission mechanism, particularly for motor vehicles, in which the changespeed gear 40, Fig. 3, is arranged at the opposite end of the engine A to the driven member or axle 66, 67, and the transmission shaft 41 extends from the change-speed gear through the hollow engine shaft 26 to the driven member or axle. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the internalcombustion, steam, or other engine is of the swashplate type, the cylinders 10.. 13 being parallel to the engine shaft 26 and the pistons 14 .. 17 acting through slipper pads 20 on a swash-plate 25. The engine shaft 26 is connected through a friction clutch 36 to the driving sleeve 37 of the changespeed gear 40, the driven shaft 41 of which extends forwardly through the engine shaft to a differential gear 62 driving the front wheel shafts 66, 67 through universal joints 68. The driven shaft 41 may also be extended rearwardly from the change-speed gear, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to drive the rear wheels 78 as well as the front wheels. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 two engines C, D are shown each driving a separate front wheel through shafts 41c and worm or other gearing. The shafts 41c may be extended rearwardly to drive the rear wheels. In a modification the engine is arranged transversely with its shaft.in line with the front wheel axles the change-speed gear and differential being at one end of the engine, and one of the differential shafts driving the adjacent road wheel while the other differential shaft passes through the change-speed gear and the engine shaft to drive the other road wheel.
