361,629. Indicating liquid levels. MAHON, H. G. B., Northlands, Spital Terrace, Gosforth, Northumberland, and HOPKINSONS, Ltd., Britannia Works, Huddersfield. Nov. 28, 1930, No. 35805. [Class 123 (i).] In gauge glasses of the reflecting prism type, the effects of erosion of the glass and of double reflection are minimized by exposing a flat or plane face of the prism to the liquid, the inclined faces being external faces. The gauge comprises a metal body a, Fig. 3, having a channel b for the liquid. A plane face e of the prism seals the liquid channel, and light passing through the inclined face f is reflected at the surface e above the liquid level, and is viewed through the face g. Light reaching the surface e below the liquid level is refracted into the liquid and that part of the prism therefore appears dark. The prism is clamped in position by a bar i. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 6, the prism is provided with transverse corrugations on the outer face, the path of the light rays being shown at A, B, Fig. 6. In Fig. 8, the corrugations are arranged longitudinally, and the reflection of light rays is across the gauge.
