Abstract
360,921. Submarine cables. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Bush House, Aldwych, London. Aug. 13, 1930, No. 24268. [Class 36.] The end section of a continuously loaded submarine cable of the concentric return type is formed with the concentric return loaded, and, at least in part, insulated to shield the return from low frequency electric disturbance. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a main conductor 2 with loading 3 and insulation 4 is covered with tough insulating tape 5 on which is laid the return conductor 6. Tape insulation 7 and a layer of insulation 8, which may be formed by extrusion, cover the conductor 6. Loading tape 12 is applied over the insulation 8, and a jute covering 9 and armouring 10 are applied. The armouring 10 forms part of the return circuit, and is loaded with iron strips 11 placed over the armouring 10. In the construction of Fig. 2 the return conductor is formed solely of copper wires or strips 6 and the loading tape 12 is applied over the insulation 7, the armouring 10 forming no part of the return. In a modified construction the loading tape 12 is applied directly on the insulation 7, the insulation 8 being placed over the tape 12. The return conductor may consist of insulated wires wound on the insulation 5 with a long lay. Tape 7 covers the conductors and forms a bed for loading tape 12, or two layers of return conductors in the form of insulated wires may be used, the layers being separated by insulation and loading tape, and further insulating tape and loading being applied externally to the outer layer of insulated conductors. Specification 359,564 is referred to.
