360,246. Smoke-detecting apparatus. BUCHHOLZ GES., M., 1, Amalienstrasse, Cassel, Germany. Dec. 16, 1930, No. 37881. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1929. [Class 47 (i).] In a smoke-detecting installation of the kind in which air is led continuously from compartments a<1>, a<2>, a<3> to a control station by means of pipes Cl, C2, c3, the pipes c<1>, c<2>, c<3> are connected singly and successively to a smoke detector f by means of a switch device d. The air from the pipes not connected to the detector is byepassed by a pipe h. The switch device may comprise a ported rotary disc, which may be driven continuously or inter. mittently by gearing from the suction fan, by an electromagnet controlled by clockwork, or by other means. It may comprise means for indicating which pipe is connected to the detector f, such as a pointer q, Fig. 3, co-operating with a dial, or a luminous signalling device. Where the smoke detector comprises a smoke density meter, this meter may control, through contacts u and a selector z, drop indicator relays A<1>, A<2>, A<3> for indicating the position of the switch disc. Alter. natively, it may control contacts v for stopping the driving motor 8 of the switch disc when smoke has been detected, and switches X may be provided for breaking the drop indicator circuit of a smoke-filled compartment so that the presence of smoke therein is not again signalled.
