[Class 138 (ii).] A pressure unit for a mangle or wringer is enclosed within a housing A, Fig. 3, at each end of the rollers. The housing also contains an adjustable abutment a<1> upon which the bearing block b of the bottom roller rests or of which it forms part, and guidecheeks a<2> along which the upper bearing c slides. The pressure unit comprises a cross-bar D which is secured to or rests upon the upper bearing and is provided with two depending rods d which extend into a casing F in the bottom d of which an adjusting screw G works. Springs E are compressed between heads d<1> on the rods d and the top of the casing F. The cross-bar may be replaced by an inverted U-shaped rod, and, as shown in Fig. 7, the adjusting screw may work in an upper plate H and pass loosely through the bottom plate H<1> of the casing. In this form the springs are confined between the plates H, H<1>, and the ends d of the rod d<2> are secured in the plate H<1>. The upper plate may be U-shaped and formed with pockets to receive the springs. In the modification shown in Fig. 9 the cross-bar D is formed with depending side members K having lugs k through which pass the rods d which are secured to the plate f<1> in which the adjusting screw G works, the springs being enclosed in pockets and confined between the lugs k and the heads d<1> of the rods. The machine may be provided with a locking catch as in Specification 359,212.
