Abstract

358,385. Low temperature retorts. INTERTRUST COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE DISTILLATION ET COKEFACTION A BASSE TEMPERATURE ET MINIERE, SOC. ANON., 1, Poststrasse, Glaris, Switzerland.-(Assignees of International Holding de Distillation et Cokefaction a Basse Temperature et Miniere (Holcobami) ; 8, Rue de ]a Regence, Brussels.) Jan. 12, 1931, No. 1078. Convention date, Jan. 24, 1930. [Classes 51 (ii) and 55 (i).] Discharging.-Retorts for low temperature carbonization having movable bottoms are discharged by imparting two shocks to the charge after the bottom has been freed, the first shock to detach the charge from the retort wall so that it fall with the bottom, and the second shock to break up the charge and to cause it to fall into a container. A central rod 31 in each frusto-conical retort 1 supports the movable bottom 28, on which rests the inner perforated conical tube 27, attached to which is a ring to support the annular charge. Each rod has a solid head 33 by which it is suspended between two jaws 34, 35 pivotally mounted at 36, 37. The ends of the jaws are engaged by forks 38, 39 carried by rods 40, 41 which are connected by bell-crank levers 42, 43 with racks 44, 45 engaged by a pinion 46. The rods 40, 41 are thus moved in opposite directions, the jaws are opened, and the rods 31 fall, the impact of the heads 33 on the tops 48 of the tubes 27 detaching the charges. The stops to arrest the fall of the charge and movable members 27, 28, 31, 33 are formed by girders 50, carried by cross girders 51 on posts 52 which are vertically movable in guides 53 carried by the frame 54 of the truck. The posts are raised or lowered simultaneously by levers 56, 57, 58, which are controlled by crank wheels 59 driven from the shaft 55. When the retorts are being discharged, the posts are lowered and rest on heavy bedplates 66. The coke collapses into the body 62. The parts of the retort are replaced after discharging by raising the girders 50. The retorts are charged by hoppers carried by an overhead travelling crane. The retorts are heated in the chamber 2 by combustion gases fed through flues from combustion chambers fed from a gas pipe. The retorts open at the top into a gas collector 12 having a movable lid 13, the edge of which forms a gastight joint in the slot 14. The lid 13 is pivoted on an axis 16 fitted with an operating arm 17, through which the lid is rotated by a motor 20 through reduction gear 21 and a pinion 22 and rack member 19. The door 26 is similarly operated by a rack 23 and arm 24.
