[Classes 37 and 38 (i).] In a heating unit, one or a number of resistance wires are insulated throughout their length by nonconducting materials, such as strung-on beads, which permit free bending and are provided at intervals with supporting clips embracing the nonconducting materials. The units may be mounted in tubes. A number of such units may be mounted in series or parallel connection to terminal blocks 18. The resistance wires may be arranged cylindrically or can be spaced in one plane. In one arrangement, Figs. 3 and 4, porcelain beads 13 insulate the resistance wire 12 which is mounted and spaced in metal clips 14, 15 having end flanges 14a, 15a, mica layers 17 being located between the beads and clips. The flanges maintain the wires out of contact with the surrounding casing &c. The clips may be of stainless steel and constructed from a blank, Fig. 11, having slits 34, 35, the blank being bent to form the flanges and wire support as shown in Fig. 10. For connection to the terminal block 18, the resistance wire is clamped at 23a in nickel or copper sheaths 23. The sheaths are insulated by beads 25 and are clamped to a brass socket 20 in the terminal block by grub screws 24. The opposite end of the unit is secured to a support by metal strips which engage the flanges 14a, 15a.
