Abstract

358,042. Cigarette-making machines. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(American Machine & Foundry Co.; 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) June 2, 1930, No. 16967. [Class 130.] Cigarettes from a continuous-rod machine are caused to travel endwise along one or two pathways leading to a device for collecting the cigarettes by means of a forwarding device which forms the bottom of the pathways and is moved at a constant speed regardless of the speed of the machine. In the apparatus shown in plan in Fig. 1, and in sectional elevation in Fig. 2, two pathways are formed by a rotating disc 9, fixed guide walls 14, 18, and an inner guide wall 13 formed on the disc. The wall 14 is carried by a stationary cover 16. Cigarettes are delivered from the cutting device of the machine through a tubular guide 5 to an oscillating guide tube 6 which delivers alternate cigarettes on either side of a stationary wall 8 continuous with the guide wall 14. The speed of the cigarettes is retarded by the friction of the walls 14, 18. The disc 9 is driven by a friction disc 20 adjustable axially on a splined shaft 22 driven from the main shaft 48 of the collector through helical gearing 47, 46, 36, 35. The axial adjustment of the friction disc 20, to control the speed of the disc 9, is effected by means of an adjusting screw 32 acting upon a lever 28. The housing 24 of the friction disc 20 &c. is adjustable vertically, to take up wear of the friction disc, by turning a threaded ring 30 engaging a lifter bushing 39. The disc 9 delivers the cigarettes upon an obliquely arranged and adjustably mounted belt conveyer 49, which carries them against deflectors 50, 51 provided with curved side plates 52 53 for guiding the cigarettes in parallel arrangement on to the delivery belt 54. The cigarettes are stopped by guide rails 55, 56, and an adjustable guard rail 58 is provided. The belt conveyer 49 is driven from the roller 59, the shaft of which carries a friction roller 65 in engagement with the disc 9.
