Abstract

357,548. Photographic processes. OLIVER, L. W., CLARE, W. G., and COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHS (BRITISH & FOREIGN), Ltd., Victoria Road, Willesden, London. June 23, 1930, No. 19127. [Class 98 (ii).] Bichromated colloid and catatype processes; photomechanical printing surfaces.-In the production, more especially for colour photography, of colloid relief images by a differential hardening process such as the carbon or " carbro " process, the colloid image layers are carried during development on temporary supports of regenerated cellulose (e.g. " cellophane "), which is transparent, homogeneous, permeable to water, and retentive of its strength and toughness when wet, and are transferred after development to a final support of paper, ivory, glass, canvas, silk, metal, &c. The transfer process comprises (1) soaking the developed sheet in water, (2) placing it face downwards on the final support after coating this with an adhesive such as dilute gelatin solution, (3) drying partially or completely, and if desired immersing in a hardening bath of alum, formalin or acrolein, and (4) stripping off the temporary support. If the intermediate drying step is carried-to completion, stripping may be preceded by immersion in water only. The relief images may be used as etching resists for photogravure, after transfer to metal supports, and may be used, in particular, for producing roller printing- surfaces. Specification 340,605 is referred to.
