Abstract
357,404. Changing signs. LAYCOCK, A., 5, Geraldine Road, Wandsworth, London. Oct. 28, 1930, No. 32335. [Class 3 (i).] In roll and band display apparatus of the type in which the direction of turning of the operating handle determines which of the two rollers is directly actuated to become the winding-on roller, the mechanism consists of a longitudinally slidable spindle a to which manual power is applied, and a sleeve r surrounding the spindle and provided with means for imparting frictional resistance to its turning. Either the spindle a or the sleeve r is furnished with a helical slot s engaged by a pin t on the other member. The spindle a carries clutch elements p, q one or the other of which is brought into engagement with its coacting member n, o according to the direction in which the spindle has slid. The turuing handle may be mounted directly on the spindle a, or be arranged at rightangles and turn the spindle through bevel pinions, one of which is slidable on the spindle and engages it by a pin and helical slot or by a feather. The clutch bevel pinions i, j may drive the roller-engaging stub shafts g, h either directly or through chain and sprocket gearing. The means for imparting frictional resistance to the turning of the sleeve r may comprise a spring-pressed plate v .mounted on guides 2, or resilient wings 27, 28, Fig. 10, on a strip 25 bent to form a sleeve, or springs gripping the waist, or bearing on an end, of the sleeve. In other forms the sleeve may consist of a double or single pressed helical spring 38, Fig. 14, in the convolutions of which the pin t lies.
