Abstract
Carboxylic acids are obtained by oxidizing, in the presence of an alkaline agent, the alkyl group in an anthraquinone derivative containing an alkyl group in 2-position and a heterocyclic ring system in 1 : 9-position. The oxidation is advantageously effected by means of an aromatic nitro-compound in the presence of an oxide or hydroxide of an alkaline-earth metal, a process which may also be employed in the case of the starting materials used in the parent Specification. A catalyst, such as a copper compound, may also be present. In examples (1) pyrazolanthrone-2-carboxylic acid is obtained by oxidizing 2 - methyl - 1 : 9 - pyrazolanthrone with nitrobenzene and barium hydroxide, (2) thiazolanthrone-2-carboxylic acid is similarly obtained from 2 - methyl - 1 : 9 - thiazolanthrone, copper sulphate being employed as a catalyst, (3) by treating 2-methyl-1 : 9-thiazolanthrone with nitrobenzene and calcium hydroxide, 2 : 21-thiazolanthronylethylene is first obtained; on further oxidation in the presence of barium hydroxide the thiazolanthrone-2-carboxylic acid is obtained, and (4) 2-methyl-1 : 9-thiophenanthrone carboxylic acid is heated with nitrobenzene and soda-lime; carbon dioxide is split off and thiophenanthrone-2-carboxylic acid is obtained. 2-Methyl-N-methyl-pyrazolanthrone and 2-methyl-1 : 9-thiophenanthrone are also specified as parent materials.
