355,570. Stuffing boxes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Phillips, E. M.; 112, Glenwood Street, Lynn, Massachusetts, U.S.A.) Oct. 13, 1930, No. 30629. Convention date, Oct. 12, 1929. [Class 122 (v).] A retaining spring for segmental shaft - packing rings 4 comprises one or more flexible metal strips 9 inserted in each half of the box 3 and carrying pairs of spaced supports 12 for straight springs 13. The ends 10 of the strips are flanged to co-operate with pins 14 and prevent circumferential movement. On assembly the strip is fed into the recess 6 and the springs 13 placed in position as it assumes a curved shape. The invention is shown as applied to the nozzle diaphragm packing of a turbine.
