Abstract

354,986. Purifying water; gravityseparation apparatus. NORTON, B., Sandford Hall, Claverley, Shropshire. July 23, 1930, No. 22276. [Class 46.] Water which has been used for washing coal is delivered to a main settling tank 16, Fig. 4, from the upper part of which water for further washing is withdrawn through a pipe 17 while slurry water is withdrawn through a pipe 18 and delivered to one or more secondary settling tanks 3, from which it flows into a sump 6 and is returned by a pump 15 to the tank 16. Fine coal may be removed from the slurry water by a vibrating sieve 19 before it reaches the tanks 3. Figs. 1 and 2 show alternative secondary settling tanks 2, 3, to which the water is supplied alternately by a trough 1 and a solution of alum or other chemical agent to accelerate settling from a tank 14. A scraper conveyer 7 removes matter deposited as either tank is being filled. Any water overflowing passes over the inner side and is led by a trough 5 to the sump 6. When one tank is full the water is directed to the other tank and the scraper 7 of the full tank is brought to rest so as to allow of a quiescent settling period, at the end of which the water is drawn off from near the liquid level through a float-controlled hinged or flexible outlet pipe 12 leading to the sump 6. After removal of the water, the settled matter is removed by the scraper 7 and delivered by a conveyer 9 to a bunker 10.
