Abstract

352,536. Vehicle doors ; fastenings. MACKENZIE, D. G., 388, Olivier Avenue, Montreal, Canada. April 11, 1930, No. 11506. [Class 103 (ii).] In order to increase the available height of the door space for passengers entering a motor-car or like vehicle and to lessen the projection of the doors when .open, the doors 12 are supported and adapted to turn about horizontal pivots 13 arranged upon a central longitudinal roof beam 10, and open in an upward direction. Preferably the doors, as shown, are of L-shape and control members comprising springs 14, cords or cables 16, and hinged straps 18 are connected between the angle of the L and the remote side of hinge plates 11, so that, after an initial lifting of the door by the passenger, the springs 14 exert a continuously increasing effort on the door and ultimately complete the opening movement. During the closing movement the pull of the springs gradually decreases, thus allowing the door finally to slam to under its own weight or with little effort on the part of the passenger. Locking-bolts 23 and operating-rods 22, Fig. 4, are arranged at the lower end of each door and are connected to opposite sides of the pivot of a lever 21 actuated from the inside of the vehicle by a handle 20 and from the outside by a handle and cam 24. A weathertight joint between the door and vehicle body is obtained by fitting on the door a U-shaped channel 12a, Fig. 5, having a base strip of fabric 25, and by forming the door frame with a complementary channel 26, a fabric overlap 27 on the door completing the joint. The portion of each door extending across the roof may have an opening therein closable when desired by a strip of fabric or by other means.
