Abstract
For the purpose of nitrating cellulose which has been prepared in a dense form as described in Specifications 322,998 and 323,019, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], the cellulose is first treated with a nitration mixture in which the nitric acid preponderates but is not used in such high proportion as in the processes above referred to, namely, substantially lower than 81 per cent, the nitration being subsequently completed by the use of an ordinary nitration mixture. In the first stage of the nitration, a suitable mixture consists of 60 per cent of nitric acid, 20 per cent of sulphuric acid, and 20 per cent of water. By the use of this method, highly nitrated products containing up to 13,4 per cent nitrogen can be obtained. The cellulose may be obtained in a dense form either by the process of Specification 322,998, or by treatment with small proportions of carbon disulphide and caustic soda, followed by treatment with a hardening solution such as sodium bisulphite.
