[Class 146 (i).] In a binder for holding loose leaves in overlapping formation, the two sets of prongs 8, 9 are carried by bars 6, 7 respectively capable of movement a distance equal to their length along guides 4, 5 mounted on a baseplate 1 fixed to the cover 2 of a book so as to facilitate the rearrangement of the series of leaves when one or more leaves are added or removed. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, the guide 5 is fixed to the plate 1 and the guide 4 has eyes 10 slidable on rods 11 fixed to the guide 5, springs 14 extending between the guide 4 and stops 15 on the plate 1 pressing the guide 4 towards the guide 5 so as to hold the prongs 8, 9 in closed position. Springs 21 fixed to the guides 4, 5 have recesses 22 which engage the prongs and hold the bars 6, 7 in any desired position. A cam 17 rotatable by means of a rod 18 and fingerpiece 20 is situated between the guides 4, 5 and operated when it is desired to separate the prongs. In a modification, the two guides 4, 5 are pivoted at their outer edges to the plate 1 and springs tend to hold them in the closed position of the prongs 8, 9. A fingerlever having projections engaging beneath the guides is turned to open the prongs. Projections on springs fixed to the guides 4, 5 project through openings in the guides and engage recesses in the bars 6, 7 to hold them in any desired position.
