Abstract
Aqueous formic acid is concentrated by mixing with formamide and a concentrated or gaseous mineral acid and heating to 60-80 DEG C., the water being consumed in the hydrolysis of the formamide. Nitric acid may be used, but a non-oxidizing acid is preferred. Examples describe the use of sulphuric and hydrochloric acids. The formic acid may be distilled under reduced pressure, the ammonium salt present being first separated, if desired. When reduced pressure is employed, any formic acid not condensed in the condenser may be intercepted in a washer containing water or formamide placed between the condenser and the suction apparatus.
