Abstract

347,297. Cellulose. LA ROZA, J. J. DE, Tuinucu, Cuba. Dec. 30, 1929, No. 39776. [Class 96.] In a modification of the process described in Specification 322,763, [Class 96, Paper &c.], for the production of cellulose from annual plants such as canes, corn stalks, straws, and grasses, particularly applicable to the treatment of sugarcane fibre, the material, as free as possible from sugar, is shredded and screened to separate the short fibres and dust therefrom, and the long fibres impregnated with sulphurous acid and then stored for a suitable period, which may be several months. This treatment obviates the tendency to form fungi and other growths. After storing, the material is concentrated and then heated with sulphurous acid at a temperature not exceeding 110‹ C. A few minutes' heating yields a good quality cellulose pulp for paper making and three or more hours is required for the production of high content alpha cellulose such as is suitable for explosives, artificial silk, photographic films, pyroxylin products, cotton substitutes, absorbents, and the like. After washing and squeezing, the material is treated with alkali at a temperature below 100‹ C. For this treatment caustic soda or potash is preferred, but magnesia, lime, &c., sodium sulphate, sulphide, or sulphite may be used or added. Washing, followed by a more vigorous treatment with a similar alkali at a temperature not exceeding 160‹ C. for 4-6 hours, again washing and then bleaching, completes the process. The storing may be omitted and the acid treatment effected in one stage. The short fibres may be similarly treated.
