Abstract

346,323. Stapling-machines. MARKS, J. G. de J., 43, Mapesbury Road, Shoot-up- Hill, London. Oct. 5, 1929, No. 30254. Convention date, April 9. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 89 (iii).] Machines using continuous wire and strip metal.- In a wire-feed mechanism for a stapling machine, the wire is pressed against the surface of a freelymounted feed drum by two pawls, one of which is carried by a lever which is oscillated from the inserting mechanism of the machine. As shown, the wire 33 passing from the spool 31 is looped round a curved surface 50 and passes to the surface of a drum 35 freely mounted on a spindle 36. A brake 53 engages the wire on the spool. The wire is pressed against the drum 35 by pawls 45, 44. The former prevents back movement of the wire. The latter is pivoted to the tail 42 of a lever 37 which is freely mounted on the spindle 36 and has arms 38, 39 between which lies a roller 40 mounted on the plunger 5a of the staple forming and inserting mechanism. An arm 49 on a member 48 mounted on the spindle 36 underlies, and prevents looping of, the wire 33 below the drum 35. The roller 40 is so arranged that the feed of the wire does not occur until the forming and inserting instrumentalities have risen from their operating positions. The wire is fed by a guide 46a over a cutting block 30 into position over an anvil 20. The latter is cylindrical in form, with its front end cut away at 21 to form a flat face 23 for the wire. It is held forwardly by a spring 24, and is retracted, when a staple has been shaped, by a pair of levers 25 operated by the shaping devices. These comprise outside formers 10, 11, of which the latter constitutes a cutter. The formers are fixed to a slide block 9, which is engaged, and moved into shaping position, by a latch member 16 as the plunger 5a descends. When the block 9 has descended far enough, it is disengaged from the plunger by a nose 17 on the latch entering a recess 18 in the framing, against the action of a spring plunger 19.
