Abstract

344,806. Flame traps for gas conduits. HELMORE, W. and SWAN, A., Royal Aircraft Establishment, South Farnborough, Hampshire. Oct. 1, 1929, No. 29695. [Class 47 (ii).] A trap for flame resulting from explosion of gas in a conduit, e.g. the induction or exhaust system of an internal-combustion engine, comprises alternate zig-zag and flat plates 2, 1, arranged in a rigid frame 4 so that the bends of the plates 2 are adjacent; the flat plates 1 are thus relieved of bending moment and very thin plates may be used. Examples are given of suitable dimensions for petrol-air, hydrogenair, and coal gas-air mixtures. The frame 4, which may be circular, is placed in the gas conduit, and in the induction system of an internal-combustion engine, it may be placed on either side of, or incorporated in, a carburetter or pump ; if applied to the exhaust pipe, it may be cooled by a water jacket or fins.
