Abstract

344,428. Spherical-journal bearings. AKTIEBOLAGET NOMY. 2, Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm. Dec. 4, 1929, No. 37153. Convention date, Dec. 8, 1928. [Classes 12 (i) and 12 (ii).] In a journal bearing of the pivoted-block type wherein the play is so small that additional oil pressure is set up in the lower-loaded or unloaded zone of the bearing, thereby decreasing the load capacity of the bearing, means extending throughout said zone are provided for reducing this additional pressure. In a bearing wherein the blocks 6 are caused to rotate with a ring 4 fixed to the shaft 5, by reason of abutments 9 on the ing between which the blocks have a limited peripheral movement, the blocks having spherical surfaces co-operating with a spherical stationary race 2, the unloaded zone of the bearing is formed with a peripherally-extending recess 12 arranged either centrally in or at the edges of the race 2. Alternatively, axial or oblique grooves may be formed in the race, extending over either the whole or a part of the width; or the race may be provided with guide surfaces co-operating with lateral flanges on the blocks so as to cause the latter to be tilted into a position in which the co-operating bearing surfaces are concentric during the passage of the blocks through the unloaded zone. Instead of being pivoted, the blocks may be integral with the shaft or ring 4 and made resilient.
