Abstract
343,563. Electrode furnaces. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, PROCTOR, R. F. and BIGGS, H. C., of General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. Nov. 21, 1929, No. 35629. [Class 39 (iii).] In a glass furnace, the walls of which are built up from refractory blocks, the electrodes consist of conducting blocks 12 forming part of the furnace walls and of equal thickness thereto. The electrodes are made of graphite or of a mixture of graphite and fireclay. The outer faces are copper plated or coated with a mixture of sodium silicate and graphite. Metal plates 14 are clamped thereto by screwed rods 13 and cover the joint between the electrodes and the adjacent blocks 11. Boric oxide in paste form may be applied to these joints during construction. During operation the oxide fuses to form a glass seal. The furnace walls may be supported by a metal framework.
