343,257. Ball-and-ring grinding or crushing mills. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London.-(Babcock & Wilcox Co.; 85, Liberty Street, New York,U.S.A.) Jan. 2, 1930, No. 222. Addition to 334,058, [Class 59, Grinding, crushing, &c.]. [Class 59.] The screen 31 within the upper row of balls of the mill described in the parent Specification is replaced by a conically shaped, imperforate, plate 41 which is adapted to cause the material to pass from the inside to the outside of one row of balls and to direct the air current upwardly between the rows of balls and the conically shaped plate. The driving shaft 17 carries arms 15 slidably engaged by lugs in notches in a driving ring 12 spaced between two rows of balls 11, 14 running on a stationary ring 8 and a vertically movable, weighted, ring 19 respectively. The ring 19 is connected to a flanged ring 22 which is spaced apart from a similar ring 23 by springs 28 which are compressed by bolts 27. The ring 23 is suspended from rods 30 screw-threaded into a bush 31 rotatable through a worm and worm-wheel by a hand-wheel 36. An air-belt 6 with inlet 7 is formed around the mill and the air is directed by a partition 51 to passages 52 communicating with the interior of the row of balls 11 and thence passes upwardly to the separator 40 and outlet 5, a conical partition 41 preventing access of air to the row of balls 14. An annular baffle 49 rests on an annular ring plate 45 of L-shaped section which is movable vertically by adjustable rods 47 to adjust the size of the discharge opening for the material leaving the balls 14. The material is fed in by the pipe 43 to the row of balls 14, which may be of larger diameter than the balls 11, and is discharged through the gap between the plate 49 and ring 12 to the lower row of balls 11 from which it is discharged into the ascending air draught and is carried up to the separator 40, the fines passing out through the outlet 5 and the coarse material falling back through the pipe 42 to the balls 14.
