Abstract

342,406. Toothed gearing. COVERLEY, R. H., Glenroy, Clarence Road, Derby. Nov. 13, 1929, No. 34678. [Class 80 (i).] Relates to a method of and apparatus for facilitating correct assembly of bevel gearing. The bevel wheels b, a, for example of hypoid type, are first assembled in an apparatus in which driving and driven shafts b<1>, a<2> are subjected to load &c. conditions similar to those encountered in actual working, the wheels being ground &c. to accurate mesh. Their relative positions are then determined by the use of a gauge c, d, c<1>, e which determines the distance of the pinion b from the axis of the wheel a, and which may be so modified as also to determine the distance of the wheel a from the axis of the pinion b. Preferably, however, the latter determination may be replaced by an operation which registers on an indicator #<4> the backlash between the wheels. The wheels are then reassembled in the machine in which they are to be used, for instance in the back axle drive of a car, and by use of the gauge and by adjusting the wheels axially until the backlash is the same as that previously determined, they can be caused to assume the same positions that they occupied in the testing apparatus. In testing the backlash in the axle casing, a pivoted detent preventing rotation of the wheel a is used.
