[Class 4.] An accelerating device for flying machine launching tracks comprises a piston 2 working in a cylinder 1 under fluid pressure action and is characterized by the provision of means operated by the piston which allow a reduced pressure only to act on the piston during the initial part of its motion. The cylinder has at its head a reduced section through which the pressure fluid such as air or the combustion products of a gaseous or other explosive is admitted. In one form, Fig. 1, the reduced section is obtained by the use of a head 4 provided with a removable ring 3 through which projects a tapered extension 5 secured with limited freedom of movement to the piston 2. The pressure fluid acts initially only on the extension but as the piston is forced downwardly the pressure in the cylinder increases acting on the whole of the piston area when the latter has moved sufficiently to withdraw the extension 5 completely. In another form an automatic valve 7, slidably mounted on a spindle 10 having a guide 11 in the reduced part of the cylinder, is urged against a seating in the cylinder head by means of a spring 8 the tension in which is reduced as the piston advances on its stroke.
