Abstract

Phenol-formaldehyde condensation products when made by using ammonia as the condensing agent are obtained as colourless products by the use of dithiocarbamates of strong bases added either before or after the condensation, the resin formed by the condensation being evaporated until it breaks under water. According to the examples (1) 8 kilos of phenol, 9 kilos of formaldehyde (30 per cent solution), 120 c.c.m. of ammonia (0,91), and 40 grm. piperidine pentamethylene-dithiocarbamate are condensed until the mixture turns cloudy and then for 15 minutes longer; the mixture is then freed from water in a vacuum, until a specimen of the resin breaks under water at room temperature. The product is colourless. (2) 1 kilo of phenol and 1 kilo of formaldehyde are condensed with 15 c.c.m. of ammonia (0,91) until the resin separates out; the resin is then removed and heated. When the temperature reaches 120 DEG C. 5 grm. of piperidine pentamethylene-dithiocarbamate are added and the whole further freed from water until a specimen snaps under water. When adding the thiocarbamate the mixture must be heated only very gently since a rapid reaction causes frothing. The use of dimethylamine dimethyldithio-carbamate and diethylamine diethyl-dithiocarbamate is also referred to. Commercial piperidine pentamethylene-dithiocarbamate must be purified by repeated recrystalization prior to use, since it contains iron impurities.
