Abstract
340,108. Tempering sheet glass. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY ET CIREY, 1 bis, Place des Saussaies, Paris. Nov. 27, 1929, No. 36390. Convention date, March 13. [Class 56.] A process for tempering sheet glass consists in heating a sheet, whilst suspended in a vertical position, to a uniform temperature corresponding to that at which the glass commences to soften, and then subjecting the hot glass to the action of powerful jets of air directed at right angles upon the two faces of the sheet until complete cooling of the glass is effected. The sheet is suspended by two hooks which engage in shallow notches formed in its vertical edges. The suspended sheet is inserted in a metal box or casing which is placed in an electric furnace, the purpose of the box being to provide a uniform temperature in the space about the glass. When a sheet has attained a uniform temperature in the neighbourhood of 550‹-620‹ C., it is rapidly removed from the furnace by means of the suspension device and is chilled immediately by means of powerful air jets impinging at right angles on its two faces. The nozzles of the air jets are so arranged that regularly distributed centres of cooling are established on the faces of the sheet.
