Abstract

Pipes.-The adjacent ends 1<a>, 2a, Figs. 1 and 2, of two pipes 1, 2 are heated to a welding temperature and then placed over a tubular or annular anvil 3 and forge-welded together by applying external pressure substantially radially to the ends by mechanical hammers &c. The anvil, which may also be heated, is of spherical formation with relatively thin ends and a mid-section of sufficient thickness to withstand the hammering, while the diameter of its bore is preferably the same as that of the pipes. The ends of the pipes are flared to receive the anvil and are preferably scarved as at 1<b>, 2<b>. In a modification, Fig. 3, a portion of the exterior surface of the anvil is conical and the end of the pipe 2 is also conical to hold the same while the pipe 1 is being positioned. The scarving in this case is confined to the end of the pipe 1, and the two pipe ends are placed in overlapping relation before welding so as to secure a pronounced lap weld. The invention is applicable to tha jointing of pipes of different diameter, in which case the anvil is formed of appropriate shape, and with a tapered bore.
