Abstract

340,069. Oil engines. HESSELMAN, K. J. E., Saltsj÷-Storõngen, near Stockholm. Oct. 15, 1929, No. 31356. Addition to 312,376, [Class 7 (iii), Internal-combustion engines, Carburetting-apparatus &c. for]. [Class 7 (iii).] In an engine in which a rotational movement is imparted to an air charge as it enters a combustion chamber from the cylinder during the compression stroke, the chamber is so shaped as to cause the air to rotate about an axis forming an angle with the cylinder axis, and the fuel pump 9 is mounted directly on the combustion chamber 4, which is of cylindrical form with its axis substantially at rightangles to that of the cylinder 1. The chamber 4 communicates with the cylinder through a narrow tangential passage 5. Fuel is injected through a nozzle 7, by a variable stroke pump 9, along a chord, Fig. 1, or radially through a centrally placed nozzle located in one end wall of the chamber, Fig. 4. In each arrangement the fuel jets are directed towards a shield or lining 10. The engine may operate on a two-stroke cycle.
