Abstract
338,492. Robinson, P. J. May 18, 1929. Smoke and fumes, washing.- Flue &c. gases are passed through a centrifugal dust separator adjusted to leave a regulable small proportion of fine dust in the gases, which are then subjected to steam or fine water sprays whereby these particles are wetted and sulphur dioxide is oxidized to sulphur trioxide, whereupon the gases impinge against baffle-plates and are washed with a heavy shower of water to remove the dust and acid. The gas enters at A regulable centrifugal grit separators B, B<1> and then passes through steam jets d, the mist so formed entering a larger scrubber R tangentially at the base. The gas is guided by vertical curved baffle-plates E and rises slowly and spirally through a heavy water shower from nozzles. F Impinging on plane, convex or concave plates H with a turned-up serrated rim supported by adjustable chains. The water is supplied from an annular trough G with adjustable water supply, and the gas passes on up a chimney. The apparatus may be formed of nickel-chromium steel for resisting corrosion, and sections are joined by means allowing expansion such as bolting together two preferably slotted sections r<1>, r<2> in the same plane between two other plates r<4>, r<5> with spring washers r to allow movement as shown in Fig. 5A. Or a single row of bolts is. passed through the plates r<4>, r<5> between the ends of the sections r<1>, r<2> which slide on expansion. An expansion joint for the fog flues with a spring d<10> and asbestos packing d<7> is shown in Fig. 7. The scrubber is supported independently at its upper and lower ends, and the sections may be lead-lined internally. Sea water may be used for washing, or reagents such as lime added to neutralize the acid. In a modification, the apparatus is made in annular sections R<1>, Fig. 9, sheathed with similar sections Q of lead.
