Metals, depositing; electrodes, moving; preparing surfaces; treating after electrolysis; roller-conveyor apparatus; electrolytes, agitating.-Metal is deposited on a slowly rotating cathode 2, Fig. 1, supported on rollers 3 above an arc-shaped anode 5 and driven by rollers 4: Any or all of the rollers may serve as electrical connections; the deposit is detached in the form of a strip at 6 and is passed beneath anodes 19 in a second bath to receive a further deposit. While in the second bath the strip lies on a sheet 18 of plate glass or other insulator against which it is pressed by rollers 16 which have central apertures substantially greater than the spindles 20 on which they are mounted whereby they are free to revolve and are also capable of limited motion in the direction of travel of the strip. The rollers preferably bear against the strip solely by their own weight. The rollers may be oscillated transversely by eccentric mechanism, not shown, and may, if desired, make contact with the strip during transverse motion in one direction only. The anodes 19 may be of the metal it is desired to deposit or may be of inert material such as lead, carbon or ferro-silicon, the electrolyte containing a compound of the desired metal in solution or suspension; the metal may be deposited direct from an ore. Copper, zinc, nickel and silver may be deposited. A current density of 200 amps or more per sq. ft. may be employed. The strip may be passed through two or more depositing baths each provided with rollers; a strip composed of two or more metals may be produced. The initial cell is provided with semi-circular baffle plates 8 mounted on each side of the rotating cathode 2 and connected by rods 9; these are oscillated axially by eccentric mechanism not shown. The strip may be split into narrower strips or wire by two series of shearing discs 30, 31, Fig. 4, overlapping as shown, between which are mounted stationary plates 34 to. prevent bending of the strips.
