Butt joints with yielding outer part compressed. -A coupling for rubber hose pipes comprises a sleeve c having a flange c<1> for connection to a pump &c., and a flange c<2> by which the sleeve is bolted to a divided sleeve b. A collar b<4> on the hose engages a recess in the divided sleeve which is secured by bolts b<2> and by straps b<5> and screws b<6>. The sleeve b has a slight internal taper and the sleeve c has slots into which the material of the hose tends to be forced by pressure within it. The end of the hose abuts a ring d, which is screwed into the sleeve c. The ring d may be replaced by a gasket of hat-leather type.
