Ink-supply and selffilling arrangements for reservoir pens; leakage, preventing; stylographs.-In a self-filling fountain or stylograph pen, a spring- controlled valve, movable in the piston, is held open by a cap on the barrel during normal use of the pen, but during the filling-operation is actuated by a spring to close an aperture through the piston. The piston 12, Fig. 1, which consists of a hollow cylindrical metal or other member formed with slits to render it resilient, is reciprocable in a chamber formed by a partition 14 at the nib end of the barrel. The piston rod 13 is formed by a valve-member 21 adapted to close an aperture in the upper end of the piston and with a cross-bar for engaging a flange at the lower end of the piston so as to have a certain amount of lost motion. The rod, at its upper end, extends through a sleeve 17, arranged to prevent leakage of ink, into a plug 16 wherein it is surrounded by a spring 15 tending to cause the valve 21 to close the aperture 22. The valve is opened during normal use by a cap 6 screwing on to the rear end of the barrel. In place of the sleeve 17, a rubber sleeve may be employed, or a rubber cap may cover the end of the barrel and the end of the rod 13. The rod 13 may be surrounded by a tube 13<a>, Fig. 5, secured in the partition 14 and plug 16, vent holes 13<b> being formed near the rear end of the tube. Leakage from the rear end may be prevented by a rubber diaphragm 30 secured to the rod 13 and clamped between two parts of the plug 16, the diaphragm also serving, if desired, as a return spring for the rod; a spring 15<b> may also be provided in the pump chamber for the purpose.
