Abstract
337,399. Dehn, F. B., (American Rolling Mill Co.). July 29, 1929. Coating by dipping.-Metal bodies are passed successively through a flux, a bath of molten lead and a bath of molten zinc-aluminium alloy containing from 3-20 per cent aluminium by weight. In a process for coating iron or steel sheets the sheets after passing through a flux box 5 containing sal ammoniac 12 supported on molten zinc 11 are carried by guides 2 through molten lead contained in the pot 1. A layer 9 of zinc-aluminium alloy floats on the lead on the exit side of a partition 7. Exit rolls 4 and stirring or skimming rolls 6 are provided. Commercially pure zinc is preferably used both in the formation of the zinc-aluminium alloy and in the flux box. The coated body may then be heated to a temperature near or above the melting point of the coating to produce a dull surface suitable as a base for paint &c.
