Calcining seaweed.-Seaweed is calcined in an apparatus which comprises a cutting machine A of any suitable type, from which by elevator 11 the seaweed proceeds to conveyers 13, which conduct it through a steam-heated gallery 16 running round three sides of the building, whence it is delivered to a shoot 43, raised b an elevator 36, and delivered by shoot 38 to a furnace, 3, which calcines the seaweed and heats a boiler 35 to raise steam which is then. passed to a superheater and thence to the drying chamber 16.
