Specific - gravity estimating-apparatus. - Apparatus for determining the specific-gravity of solids or liquids comprises a weighing resistant, such as a spring, provided with an index, a straight-line indicator also having an index, means for bringing the two said indices into register for indicating the weight in air position, a slidable member having an index adapted to be set to the weight in water position and an adjustable member adapted to intersect the straight line indicator for equating to unity the difference between the weights in air and in water, and for indicating specific gravity in terms of length on the straight line indicator. In the form shown in Fig. 1, which is particularly intended for determining the specific gravity of liquids, the solid body 6 is suspended from the spring 7 carrying the index 8 and the graduated straight line indicator 10 having the index 10<a> is adjusted to the position determined by the weight in air of the body 6, the indices 8, 10<a> being then brought into register by turning the adjusting-screw 7a. The body 6 is then immersed in water in the vessel 12 and the slide 15 carrying the pivoted member 14 is adjusted vertically by the knob 11 until the index 14a thereon registers with the new position of the index 8. The member 14 is then adjusted about its pivot 14b until its upper edge intersects the scale 10 at the graduation 1.0, and is clamped to the member 15. The body 6 is then immersed in the liquid of which the specificgravity is required and the slide 15 is adjusted vertically until the index 14a registers with the new position of the index 8. The intersection of the upper edge of the member 14 with the scale 10 then shows the; specific-gravity of the liquid. Another form for measuring the specific-gravity of solids heavier than water is described in which the scale arm 10 is horizontal. A third form is also described for measuring the specific-gravity of solids lighter than water. In this form the adjustable slide 15 is provided with an additional vertical bar carrying an index mark.
