Abstract

335,434. Cameo (Machinery), Ltd. Nov. 23, 1928, [Convention date]. Delivery apparatus.-Delivery mechanism for delivering successive paper sheets into different stacking devices, e.g., delivering printed signatures from folding machines, comprises a freelypivoted deflector 26 and a series of independent sheet-operated detector members connected thereto, each detector being adapted to actuate the deflector in one direction. The deflecting and stacking mechanism is mounted in a frame 10 separate from the main machine 16 and is driven therefrom by the engagement of a driving pinion with a conveniently-situated pinion of the main machine. The sheets after leaving the delivery rolls 18, 19 of the folding machine are forwarded by rolls 24, 25 to the deflector 26 which is pivoted at 27 so as to direct the sheet either upwardly between rolls 29, 30 to a stacker conveyer 12 or downwardly between rolls 31, 32 to a stacker conveyer 13. In one form, Fig. 5, each path has a deflector-member in the form of a shoe 43 which normally extends between the discs forming the roll 30 and in close proximity to the roll 29. The shoe 43 is carried by a spindle 42 mounted in a bracket 34 bolted to the frame 10 at 33. A threaded rod 36 is fixed to an extension 35 of the bracket 34 and passes through a fixed post 37. Springs 38, 39 surround the rod 36 on each side of the post 37, and by varying the compression of the springs by nuts 40 on the rod 36, the bracket 34 can be adjusted about its pivot. Extending from the spindle 32 are two projections 45, 46, the first of which is connected to a fixed pin 48 by a spring 47 tending to hold the shoe 43 in its normal position. A screwed rod 49 having adjusting nuts 50 on its outer end passes freely through the projection 46 and at its inner end carries a plate 51 slotted at 52 to receive a pin on the deflector 26. A spring 53 surrounds the rod 49 between the projection 46 and the plate 51. A similar arrangement of detector shoe 54, adjustable bracket 56, and threaded rod 66<1> is provided in connection with the lower path of the sheet. When the sheet A passes over the deflector 26 to the rolls 29, 30, it engages the shoe 43 and moves it to the position shown against the action of the spring 47. At the same time, the projection 46 tends to turn the deflector 26 through the rod 49 and spring 53, but the presence of the sheet A extending between the rolls 29, 30 and the rolls 24, 25 prevents the full movement of the deflector and the spring 53 becomes compressed. As soon as the tail of the sheet leaves the rolls 24, 25, the spring 53 causes the deflector 26 immediately to rotate into position to guide the succeeding sheet B to the rolls 31, 32, the pin-and-slot connections of the rods 49, 66<1> to the deflector allowing of this movement. The sheet B acts on the shoe 54 and through it the deflector, in order to direct the next sheet to the rolls 29, 30 and so on. In another form, Fig. 9, the upper detector member 43 is carried by a spindle 42 and has a counter balancing arm 43<1>. It extends between the roller 29 and the discs 30 and the roller 29 has a groove 29<1> into which the end of the member 43 can be received. The lower detector member 54 is similarly arranged on a spindle 55 so as to extend between the rollers 31, 32. Lever-members 79, 80 are carried by the spindles 42, 55 respectively and their ends engage a radial plate 27<1> fixed to the spindle 27 of the deflector 28. Normally the detector 43 extends into the groove 29', but when it is engaged by the leading edge of a sheet it is moved out of the groove and through the lever 79 and plate 27<1> turns the deflector into position to guide a sheet to the lower rollers 31, 32. The movement of the plate 27<1> causes the detector 54 to enter the groove 31<1> in the roller 31 ready to operate the deflector when a sheet engages it. Specifications 308,352, 315,692, and 317,313 are referred to.
