Abstract

334,717. Frith, W. J. Sept. 18, 1929. Exhaust silencers. -Exhaust gases enter a helical conduit 4 which surrounds a hollow cylinder 5 connected to a fish tail outlet by a pipe 7. In the wall of the cylinder 5 are sets of ports 5 which register with ports 11 in a valve member 10 rotated by an arm 12 extending through the wall of an outer casing 1. Stops limit the angular movement of the valve member. The valve member may be formed with a partition 16 to divide the gases into two streams. If preferred, the helix 3 may be formed integral with the cylinder 1 instead of with the cylinder 5. The valve member 10 is split longitudinally to provide for expansion. In a modification, the exhaust pipe is arranged as a spiral, the inner walls of the coil being perforated for the escape of the gases into the hollow core of the coil, the whole being surrounded by a sleeve with an outlet to the atmosphere.
