Abstract

334,634. United States Cast Iron Pipe & Foundry Co., (Assignees of Langenberg, F. C.). Dec. 29, 1928, [Convention date]. Metal-working apparatus.-Radial contraction and axial elongation of a hollow cylindrical body is produced by means of external fluid pressure acting radially and, in some cases, also axially. The steel pipe mould D, Fig. 1, is placed in a container A having at one end a recess a<1> for the socket end D<1> of the mould, which is packed by a cup-leather E between rings F, G. A mandrel C may be placed in the mould, and the end of the container is closed by a plate B. The other end of the mould is packed by a cup-leather E', resting against rings F<1>, I which abut on piston-rings H, sprung into grooves in the mould. Fluid pressure admitted by a passage A<2> acts radially on the mould and also exerts an axial pressure on the packing E<1>. In a modification, Fig. 2, the axial force is eliminated, the end of the mould sliding in the cup-leather E<2>, which rests on rings F<3>, K abutting on an end-plate J. When the blank D is cylindrical throughout a similar packing may be employed at the other end of the container. The process is applicable also to articles of brass or bronze. Articles may be subsequently subjected to heat treatment at from 200-400‹ C.
